Wooster Boys Soccer Says Goodbye to Three Seniors

by: Michael Guillcatanda

Max, Chris, and Eian after winning the HVAL Championship last weekend

In the last regular season home game of the season, the Wooster Boys soccer team played against Christian Heritage and celebrated Senior Day. Max Rainville, Chris Lopes, and Eian Cushnie are the only seniors on the soccer team. Throughout the course of their upper school years, after all three were on Varsity as a freshman, they made their way to seniors. Now with the season almost ending this weekend with NEPSACs, I interviewed the seniors to talk about their favorite memory of playing Soccer at Wooster, their experience in playing for Wooster, and their future plans to contribute to a sport.

Eian has had an uprising season, starting on the bench but earning a spot on the starting 11 due to his determination and hard work. When asking Eian about his favorite memory while playing soccer he stated that "Winning NEPSAC and HVAL last year as well as scoring on Senior Day last week against Christian Heritage and wearing the captain band." Eian contributed 2 goals in Wooster's 7-nil win last Saturday. When asked how the experience has been since his freshman year, Eian said, "I was really grateful for the opportunity I received in playing for the soccer team these four years in being at Wooster. We will surely miss having one of the best charismatic players on our team." So what's next for Eian? One of Eian's desires is to join or run a soccer club at his college. Everyone sends their best wishes to Eian, and thanks him for being part of the team.

Captain Chris Lopes has been an extraordinary leader and defender, helping the backline defend and keep out a vast majority of the goals. Curious, I questioned him about his favorite memory throughout the years. "My favorite memory will be winning NEPSAC in my junior year as this became Wooster's first time ever being NEPSAC Champions." With an uncertain future ahead of Chris, one of his hopes is to join a soccer club in college to maintain his connection with the sport. The soccer team wants to thank Chris for his outstanding leadership skills and for being an important part of Wooster's seasons. Next year someone will step up and take the mantle that holds all of the skills and dispositions which Chris had as captain.

Goalscorer of the Year Max Rainville has had an exceptional season, contributing to many of the team's goals. On a very memorable and emotional Senior Day, I sought to know what was Max's favorite memory since freshman year. "A favorite memory of mine is from Junior year, taking the water pitcher and dumping it all over Coach Malta." When asked how his overall experience was in soccer, he said "My experience at Wooster for soccer surpassed my expectations. I had some great guys who took me under their wing my freshman year, and I'm lucky to be on a championship-contending team with amazing teammates." An ambition that Max has after finishing high school would be to play soccer for a college in Canada or the United States. With a big hole left after Max's departure, the soccer team faces a big challenge in order to replace one of the most important players Wooster has had.

I personally want to thank all the seniors for being great leaders and always helping the team achieve greater goals every day. I also wish them my best regards for the future and congratulate them for their amazing senior season at Wooster this year.
