Senior Reflections: Carolina & Sadie

by: Elise Newman

As a senior, I have been reflecting on my past three years of high school as well as thinking about the months to come. In DLI Humanities with Mr. Pannone, we touched upon the thoughts and feelings that follow. We talked about the various major events that are impending for the seniors. College applications, leadership responsibilities, planning school-wide events, SIS, etc. Mr. Pannone has implemented journaling for every student in his class that we will keep up with for the entire school year. This gave me the idea to start a WiNK Senior Journal so that non-DLI Humanities students can take part. My goal is that every Senior who wants to will have the opportunity to share their experience and then check back in at the end of the year to compare their answers. Hopefully, the senior class will grow closer due to the similarities they find in each other's journals and the underclassmen will use this information in preparation for their own senior years.

This week we have an inside look at Carolina Rafael and Sadie Drahzal's thoughts and feelings toward senior year.

Sadie:

How has your senior year been so far? What feels different now that we are in the second trimester of senior year?

My senior year hasn't been too bad. It has its chill and stressful moments, but for me, that mostly depends on workload. The second trimester feels much more relaxed than the first trimester because my classes calmed down, and it's also nice not to be working on college applications anymore.

What are you most looking forward to in these last months before we leave for SIS?

I'm super excited for the time slot of spring break to our SIS. Of course spring break will be fun, but after that, it'll be prom season, and I'm super excited for that! It's nice being on student activities as well because I feel like I'll get to watch everything prom related come to life.

What three words would you use to describe how you are feeling right now? Why these words?

I guess my words would be calm, excited, and hungry! Calm, because things have chilled out a bit, which I can absolutely appreciate. Excited, because I'm just starting to comprehend that I know what my next step is beyond Wooster. Finally, hungry, because we're doing the cooking unit in chem, and it's very fun, as well as yummy.

What is causing you the most stress currently? Why?

I guess I'm somewhat stressed about my workload at the moment. Honestly, my workload isn't bad, but I don't want to get too comfortable and forget to do stuff, etc. I also have a lot to do for the musical, and that I enjoy, but it'll still be time consuming.

How are you doing in relation to the college process? Have you gotten in anywhere? Have you made any decisions?

I'm happy I'm finished with my college application process, so I have a lot less to be worried about! I did early decision, so I heard back shortly before winter break. I am now a future Bucknellian, Class of '27.

What is your favorite class currently? Why?

Right now I love chem because I get to cook, which I love, and eat, which I love! Mr. P also rocks.

Final words:

Remember to take time for yourself while also making sure you complete your work!

Carolina:

How has your senior year been so far? What feels different now that we are in the second trimester of senior year?

So far, my year has been stressful, but at the same time such a life changing experience. It feels weird to be planning our final events such as our last prom here or getting close to the last trimester of our high school years. I think what's different now is that we're in the middle of everything. We're hearing back from schools now, our work has been changing a lot, and it's pretty much our last trimester before the juniors start gaining the responsibilities we have.

What are you most looking forward to in these last months before we leave for SIS?

I'm looking forward to being with my friends for the last few months of school and being done with all of my work.

What three words would you use to describe how you are feeling right now? Why these words?

Anxious, excited, bittersweet. I'm anxious to see where I end up, excited to be moving forward, but the feeling overall is bittersweet because I'll be leaving high school, my friends and family (I will be in contact of course!) but moving on to something so important in my life.

What is causing you the most stress currently? Why?

Definitely how the end of the year will end up like. With a lot on my plate at once I'm worried about whether I'd get into my top schools or not, if I'd finish my work on time and if my SIS project would go well.

How are you doing in relation to the college process? Have you gotten in anywhere? Have you made any decisions?

So far I'm doing very well! I've gotten into my safety schools and now I'm waiting for my top choices. I should hear back from them very soon, and once I do that I'll make my decision.

What is your favorite class currently? Why?

My favorite class is definitely chemistry. The unit we've been working on has been incredibly fun. Making odd looking and tasting gummy bears has been a highlight in stressful times.

Final words:

As much as I'm excited to be moving on to the next chapter in life, leaving Wooster is going to be tough for me. I made such good memories, and friends, learned life lessons and grew as a person a lot.
